When George Lucas created "Star Wars" in 1977 he envisioned a space station the size of a small moon with the power to destroy a whole planet. Although Saturn's moon Mimas had been discovered much earlier, no close up images of its surface existed at the time. Imagine the surprise when, in 1980, the Voyager probes returned detailed images resembling the "Death Star"! The crater that gives Mimas its distinct look is called Herschel, after the moon's discoverer. Follow these links for more details about Mimas and for technical specifications of the Death Star.
