Jupiter and a close up of its Great Red Spot (click to enlarge)
The gas giant Jupiter rotates extremely quickly, spinning once on its axis in about ten hours. This rapid rotation powers gale force winds and monstrous hurricanes. The Great Red Spot is a hurricane roughly three times the diameter of Earth. It was first discovered by Galileo in the early 1600's and has not died down since. The Red Spot's extraordinary longevity is caused by two parallel bands of wind above and below it that move at different speeds. These winds keep the giant storm swirling, just as sliding the palms of your hands against one another can force a marble trapped between them to rotate.
