Different Types of Impact Craters

All impactors excavate simple bowl-shaped craters initially. If the impactor is small, it will not crush or melt the target much and the crater can maintain its bowl shape. Larger impacts, however, crush and partially melt the target. Gravity then pulls material downslope; this material flows toward the center and collides to forms a central peak.
