Did you know that comets are rich storehouses of ices, and may have been the source of most of Earth's volatile inventory, including our oceans?

Comets and asteroids are remnant debris left over from the creation of the Solar System. In the inner Solar System, temperatures were hot enough that water remained in the gaseous form and was not incorporated into the growing terrestrial planets. Asteroids are primarily rocky objects in the inner Solar System, while comets are made mostly of ices and reside further from the Sun. In the early Solar System billions of comets and asteroids collided with the fledgling planets. Astronomers believe that impacting comets from the cold outer Solar System probably delivered most of Earth's water. For more information click here.
